About the Gut Microbiota

Our gut microbiota is a highly complex ecosystem, nearly as unique as our fingerprint! In our gut microbiota, also known as the microbiome, essential substances like vitamins and neurotransmitters are produced. The microbiome also plays a key role in food digestion and the proper absorption of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. Therefore, the microbiome is an extremely important ecosystem in our body. To ensure all these processes run smoothly, the body collaborates with the microbes present in the intestines, including bacteria. These gut bacteria can be categorized as beneficial and unhelpful bacteria and temporary or permanently residing species. A healthy gut flora is characterized by balance.

How Do Bacteria and Enzymes Function?

In our gut microbiota, billions of microorganisms live, each with its own function in the broader context of our digestion. There is a collaboration between our body and the bacteria that inhabit our intestines. When these species are in balance, we refer to it as a healthy gut flora. Enzymes have the ability to accelerate specific processes in our body, sometimes up to a trillion times! They are 'chemical factories' rightfully called the workhorses of our body. Digestive enzymes act as a catalyst in our digestive system. You are not what you eat but what you absorb. Therefore, cherish these little helpers in your digestive system!

Unraveling Our Gut Microbiota

Knowledge about our gut microbiota is continually evolving. We actually know very little about this complex system, and our current knowledge is just the tip of the iceberg. Almost all experts agree that further exploration of our gut microbiota is worthwhile. Did you know that bacteria communicate in a unique way? Throughout the body, including the intestines, bacteria are constantly in conversation with each other through a mechanism called 'Quorum Sensing,' and they coordinate their behavior through substances they secrete, namely signaling molecules. They can, among other things, sense whether there are many of their kind nearby or not, and they collaborate in ingenious ways. Due to their unique communication system, bacteria can sense whether they are alone or with others, enabling them to collaborate in ways we are only beginning to understand.

The History of Probiotics

Although the term 'probiotics' dates back to 1953, the principle is much older. The first traces of probiotic use date back to the Neolithic period, between 10,000 and 5,000 BCE. Herders in the Middle East stored milk in bags made of goat skins during that time. As the sun shone on it, the milk began to ferment due to a combination of lactic acid bacteria and yeasts. The origins of other fermented foods, such as kefir, beer, and wine, also go back to around 7,000 BCE. However, the significance of these sometimes accidental discoveries only became apparent much later, in the 19th century.

In this century, the French chemist and biologist Louis Pasteur developed his theory that the cause of many diseases was a tiny living being, which he called a 'microorganism.' This microbe theory is one of the most important discoveries in medical history, leading to many new insights in microbiology. However, real probiotic science in Europe only took off in the 1990s, and since then, probiotics have been the subject of numerous clinical studies.
