CoQ10: What is it?

Coenzyme Q10, also called CoQ10 or ubiquinone, is a fat-soluble, vitamin-like substance that occurs naturally in the human body. It plays a key role in energy production within mitochondria, the energy factories of our cells. CoQ10 is most commonly found in tissues with high energy requirements, such as the heart, liver, and kidneys. Supplemental CoQ10 is available in both ubiquinone and ubiquinol, the oxidized and reduced forms.

CoQ10 supplements are available in a variety of formulations that vary in their absorption and specific applications. Some products contain standardized ubiquinone combined with natural absorption enhancers such as black pepper extract.
